It was a crazy week for me in the work world. I mentioned a few weeks back that the health insurance industry is active right now with a lot of job opportunities presenting themselves. I received many outreaches from recruiters about my specific background. Long story short, after giving all of them many reasons to back off in the form of my expectations for compensation and work/life balance, one continued to be persistent. I got an offer this week that included a 25% salary increase, bonus potential and a generous benefits package. Combined with the impression I got of the company culture, I accepted the offer. Despite the numbers, it was a tough decision to make because of the great balance I have now and I urge anyone in the same situation to weigh all aspects of your life other than just money before jumping ship.
I mention this to kick off next week’s post theme about jobs and work life. I will pass along what I learned in dealing with recruiters, negotiations, and what is important in a job (other than money).
In addition to my work ventures, our air conditioner decided to die this week, so the rest of my time was spent looking for contractors. My advice for people in this situation:
- Get suggestions for contractors from trusted friends and colleagues
- Get at least 3 bids
- Research the actual price of the equipment/materials used
- Ask for specifics about how they plan to fix the issue (so you know if the bids are apples to apples comparisons)
- Ask to see their license
- Ask for at least a 1 year labor warranty
- Ask for references
- Don’t pay up front
To My Fellow Bloggers
Because of my crazy week, there was little time for me to get to all of your pages this week (you all know who you are). I promise to catch up this weekend and find what great information and ideas you came up with this week.
Have a great weekend.
