Last week, I started looking on Craigslist in the “gigs” section for some odd jobs to fill up my time now that soccer refereeing is over for the spring season. I found one that I am excited about and it further proves my stance that money can be made from nearly any talent or ability.
Drum roll please: the opportunity is with a group called Charming Characters Entertainment. They hire people to dress up as children’s characters for parties. According to the ad, applicants must be able to get into character, lead games, and plan performances to keep the kids entertained. What is great about this is I enjoy performing and it will likely be only weekends since that is when most people have birthday parties. The pay is not bad either at $35 an hour. In addition, I suspect this is a female dominated job, so I may not have as much competition for the male role needs. An interview is not yet scheduled but should be in the next couple of days.
When preparing for this interview, I think it is important to paint a picture of all the experiences I have had up to this point that make me qualified for this position. For something like this, I have to be a little more creative with those qualifications.
I performed in 2 musicals and 3 children’s plays in college. During the children’s plays, the cast played interactive games with the kids during intermission.
I played in bands for over 10 years, singing in many of them. This shows I am not afraid to be in front of an audience.
I currently teach guitar lessons to kids and adults from age 8 up to 40. This shows that I am able to plan activities and be engaging for a wide range of people.
I volunteer at the local children’s hospital, interacting and playing games with the kids there.
What is important to remember when something like this comes around is that any experience you have may lead to something else. Be open-minded to new experiences and they could lead to something else. I don’t want to count my chickens before they hatch, but this, for me, is a great possibility to get paid and have fun with something. The only question now is what character I want to audition as!
Do you use Craigslist for odd jobs? Have you found anything interesting? Are you pursuing any of the opportunities?
